Cell surface characteristics and adherence of typeable and non-typeable strains of Streptococcus suis from pig farms in Cuba Rev Salud Anim.
Espinosa Castaño,Ivette; Arias Baéz,Michel; Lobo Rivero,Evelyn; Martínez Marrero,Siomara.
Streptococcus suis infection is considered a major problem in the swine industry. There are 35 known serotypes of S. suis based on the capsular polysaccharides (CPS) on the cell surface. Serotype 2 is the most virulent in pigs and humans. Some S. suis strains do not agglutinate with any of the typing antisera and are identified as non-typable strains, which have generally been viewed as organisms that do not cause important clinical infections. Previous studies have shown differences in the composition and properties of the cell surface among these strains. The aim of this study included the characterization of cell hydrophobicity, ability to adhere to plates, and autolysis over time of typeable and non-typeable strains of S. suis from farms of the Cuban...

Baez,M; Espinosa,Ivette; Vichi,J; Martínez,Siomara.

Evaluation of simplified DNA extraction methods for Streptococcus suis typing Rev Salud Anim.
Espinosa,Ivette; Báez,M; Percedo,María Irian; Martínez,Siomara.
Streptococcus suis is a gram-positive bacterium that causes serious diseases in pigs and in humans with occupational risk. The DNA extraction methods for amplification of gene fragments by PCR for typing S.suis may be complex, and expensive chemical reagents and time consuming. The aim of this study was to evaluate a method for the rapid release of the genomic DNA from S.suis colonies by using a physical method based on heating and freezing; in this case, temperatures of 100ºC and 95ºC were tested. The results showed that DNA extraction directly from colonies by heating at 100ºC could be useful for an easy genotyping of S.suis strains in a short time, while 95ºC was not sufficient for DNA release. The detection limit of the PCR assay using DNA obtained by...

IDENTIFICACIÓN DEL GEN syl EN AISLAMIENTOS CUBANOS Streptococcus suis PROCEDENTES DE CERDOS MEDIANTE LA REACCIÓN EN CADENA DE LA POLIMERASA (PCR) Rev Salud Anim.

In vitro biofilm forming potential of Streptococcus suis isolated from human and swine in China BJM
Dawei,Guo; Liping,Wang; Chengping,Lu.
Streptococcus suis is a swine pathogen and also a zoonotic agent. The formation of biofilms allows S. suis to become persistent colonizers and resist clearance by the host immune system and antibiotics. In this study, biofilm forming potentials of various S. suis strains were characterized by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tissue culture plates stained with crystal violet. In addition, the effects of five antimicrobial agents on biofilm formation were assayed in this study. S. suis produced biofilms on smooth and rough surface. The nutritional contents including glucose and NaCl in the growth medium modulated biofilm formation. There was a significant difference in their biofilm-forming ability among all 46...

Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica y Streptococcus suis EN EL COMPLEJO RESPIRATORIO PORCINO Rev Salud Anim.

Streptococcus suis is an important swine pathogen in most countries with intensive swine production. S. suis has also been isolated in humans and other animal species. Data regarding serotyping of S. suis isolates from diseased pigs in Cuba using a reference antiserum are not available. S. suis isolates from pigs of four farms located in the western region of Cuba were characterized by serotyping. Most of the isolates was collected from pigs with pneumonia, followed by arthritis cases. Serotypes 2, 4, 8, 15, 16 and 34 were found in isolates from diseased pigs during the period 2002-2008, while serotypes 1, ½, 2, 3, 9, 13, 23, 24 and 31were found from samples collected during 2009-2014. Serotype 2 recovered from systemic (arthritis) and localized...

Del'Arco,A.E.; Santos,J.L.; Bevilacqua,P.D.; Faria,J.E.; Guimarães,W.V..
The epidemic aspects of swine infections caused by Streptococcus suis were studied, focusing mainly on the occurrence of several serotypes. A total of 323 samples of S. suis were isolated from clinically ill animals, serotyped according to the co-agglutination procedure, and analyzed. The serotyping revealed that S. suis was present in several Brazilian states. The largest number was isolated from the states of Minas Gerais (62.5%), São Paulo (10.8%), and Paraná (9.3%). Serotype 2 was the most frequent (61.0%), followed by the serotypes 1, 3, 4, 7, and 8. The largest number of isolations was obtained from the brain (60.1%), followed by the lungs (10.4%). About 9.4% of the cases were due to septicemia.
